President's Message

‘A Time for Change…Rebuild, Reform and Reconnect’

It is with mixed emotions that I would like to inform the membership that Mr. James Nelson has stepped down from his role as President of the SPDSA. It is never easy for a Board to lose a committed member however I understand that life priorities including work and family take precedence in these circumstances.

The SPDSA Board of Directors would like to thank Mr. Nelson for his service to the SPDSA Board and wish him the best in his future endeavours. Mr. Nelson demonstrated passion for this great game and caring for the individuals who played it.

I, David Linford, have been unanimously appointed to the role of President of the SPDSA by the Board of Directors. I am pleased and humbled to accept this role and will strive to bring improved governance, communication, and transparency to the membership. I do not take this appointment lightly and understand that some heavy lifting and bridge building will be necessary to accomplish our goals.

The Sherwood Park District Soccer Association is currently going through changes that may feel somewhat challenging and uncomfortable to some of our members. Change is always difficult but often necessary in order to improve and restore a strong foundation that can be successfully built upon.

A foundation that includes Strategic Imperatives that support our new Mission statement is essential to creating a great organization and one that brings pride to its members. I invite everyone to read these documents as they become available on the website.

It is no surprise to many of our members that the SPDSA has faced some organizational growing pains and communication pitfalls over the last several years. The Board of Directors acknowledges that these concerns are real and have begun the groundwork to effect positive change.

Part of the foundation to success begins with a strong administrative team that is able to work synergistically with the Board and the Membership. The Board of Directors felt that change was needed in our office to help achieve our strategic imperatives. It is with this vision in mind that we have chosen to part ways with Mrs. Margaret Dunlop and redefine the General Managers position. This decision was not taken lightly. Mrs. Dunlop has been and likely will continue to be a strong supporter of Soccer in Alberta and Sherwood Park. She has spent countless hours supporting the youth of Sherwood Park and the SPDSA. I would personally like to thank her and publically acknowledge her work and commitment to the game of Soccer. A General Manager is currently being recruited and I would encourage any interested individuals to read the job description under the Employment section found in the menu on the SPDSA website.

Moving forward, there are many bricks to be laid and much mortar to spread. I would like to re-engage our members and invite them to step up into Volunteer roles to help us achieve our goals. The SPDSA is only as strong as our membership. Our coaches, parents, players and community make us strong.

If the indoor season and the great performances that I have watched are any indication of the upcoming outdoor matches, we are indeed in great technical shape at the SPDSA.

I would ask that everyone join us in these new and exciting times for Sherwood Park Soccer. Please feel free to contact myself or any Board member in regards to future plans and events.

Together we can make the SPDSA a great organization by rebuilding, reforming and reconnecting!

Respectfully,

David Linford
